Mech Dept News 1977-78

This year the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been granted a sum of Rs. 8 lakhs by the Government of India and a matching sum of Rs. 2.66 lakhs by the Government of Maharashtra for moder-nizing the facilities used for training and research. Some of the salient additions to the equipment are Dynamic balancing machine. Automatic Boiler. Variable compression engine testing rig, Bar automat. Milling and shaping machines, cylindrical grinder, multi-stage Centrifugal pump etc.

The facilities for undergraduate training at the department arc being expanded in view of the additional intake of 120 students at First Semester for this year. Under this scheme the workshop, space as well as machines, are being increased so as to acco-mmodate the additional students. Similarly some increase in the experimental facility in the Heat Engines Laboratory, Metallurgy & Metrology Laboratories is also under way.

The Department has been given Rs. 1.08 lakhs towards betterment of facilities for Post-Graduate Courses. Under this scheme equipment such as stress freezing oven, wave band analyzer, storage oscillos-cope, strip chart recorders etc. are being procured.

Industrial Liaison :
 i) The faculty members of the Depart-ment are continuing to hold upgradation tests for the employees of M/s Kirloskar Brothers Ltd., Kirloskarwadi. The team was headed by Prof. P. A. Kulkarni.

ii) A 'faculty study' to fix up rest time allowances for the foundry workers of Mis. Kirloskar Brothers Ltd., was undertaken & the recommendations have been accepted. The work was done by Mr. P. G. Ramdasi and Mr. V. R. Bahulekar.

iii) AKAY Industries. Hubli, have app-roached the College for investigation of the bearing heating problem for their chemical handling pumps. The work has been assig-'teen° Dr. P.A. Kulkarni and is in progress.

iv) The Foundry Supervisors of M/s Kirloskar Brothers Ltd., are being trained in pattern design by a team of our faculty membere. The course is being held on Satur-days and Sundays and would be lasting for about 15 week ends.

v) The Department has been conducting tests as per relevant I. S. Specifications in respect of centrifugal pumps, pressure and vacuum gauges, physical and metallur-gical properties of materials, air compre-ssors and material handling devices. This year the facility of testing sluice valves upto 300 mm size has been added to the Department.

All the testing facilities are being extensively used by neighbouring industries.
