3) Protection of series capacitors against over-voltages ( with a special reference to the use of saturable reactor) by Shri. V. V. Hargude under the guidance of Prof. U. Gudaru.
4) Temperature distribution in a 3-phase oil- cooled transformer' by Prof. Y. G. Kale under the guidance of Dr. M. R. Deodhar and Dr. N. K. Sane.

5) Thyristor controlled chopper for in-. duction motor drive by Shri. N. M. Gatfane under the guidance of Prof. U. Gudaru.
6) Model study with the use of bundled ground conductors for ground grid of H. V. Switch-yard ', by Shri. P. S Kotangale under the guidance of Prof. U. Gudaru.

F) Educational Tours-
The educational tours of the various classes were arranged in February 1976 to visit important industries.Staff Members accompanied the Tour Bangalore,Mysore, Ooty Prof. S. M. Ainapure Prof. H. P. Inamdar Prof C. G, Joshi.

G) Seminar on ' Electrical Drives and Controls' A Seminar Electrical Drives and Controls' was conducted by the Department on 14th, 15th and 16th June 1975. 20 tech-nical papers were presented and about 50 participants from various industries from Banglore, Mysore to Bombay and institutions attended the Seminar.

Departmental News

Prof. U. Gudaru working as Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering was promoted as Professor of Electrical Engineering with effect from 1 st December 1974.

Prof. M. R. Deodhar's thesis entitled A statistical approach to analysis and categerisation of speech signals has been accepted in December 1975 by I. I. T., Bombay, for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Prof. S. M. Ainapure and

Prof. H. P. Inamdar have been declared to have successfully passed the M. E. ( Elec.) Examination by the Shivaji University. Kolhapur. "

Prof. A. V. Risbud has joined Indian Institute of Science. Bangalore for his Doctoral studies under quality Improve-ment Programme in August 1975.

Prof. U. Gudaru delivered a series of lectures on Power system stability and operation' at the invitation of BHEL Consultancy Services Unit to their graduate trainees at New Delhi in July 1975. 61

Prof. U Gudaru has regissered for Ph. D. Degree in Shivaji University and has been working on the topic Trans-sient stability regions of multimachine power systems by the direct method of Liapunov '. His plan of work was approved by the University and the work is in progress.

1) Prof U Gudaru has attended the Short Term Course on Theory of Linear dy-namical systems' at I. I. T. Bombay, in May 75.
2) Prof. U. Gudaru has attended the short term course in 'Computer methods in Power System Analysis and Dynamics ' at I. 1. T., Kanpur, June-July 1975.
