Civil Dept News 1975-76

(1) Public Health Department:— The Department takes R and D projects and developed the flow sheets for the treatment of industrial effluents. Most of these projects are sponsored by local indus-tries, CSIK and the StateGovernment. One of the R and D Project developed by the department for the treatment of distillery effluents has received wide applications and at present 15 treatment plants from different Sugar Industries, distilleries, cotton mills and dye industries have been completed.

Shri S. V Ranade from this department, presently working at Kanpur for his Ph. D„ has developed a dual media filter for water purification, which is being tried on a prototype scale. The results are very encouraging. It would help in solving the drinking water needs of the metropolitan cities.

2) Hydraulics Department : A note concerning Lift Irrigation Schemes and allied activities in the Civil Engineering Department —
The survey, design and preparations of plans and estimates for Lift Irrigation Schemes continued during the year 1975-76 also.
The following schemes, which were submitted once were revised due to the increase in the rates of materials in general and pipes and machinery in particular. This was necessary as the Apex-Bank authorities insisted on the same,

The following schemes had to be revised to accommodate additional areas in the upper regions.

The necessary contour-surveys and longitudinal section of rising main were also carried out.

1) Karve-Dhanai L. I. Scheme Estimated cost-34,49,100 Consultancy Charges-51,737
2) Bichud-Rethare Harnax L. I. Scheme Estimated cost-42,44,100 Consultancy Charges-63,662

Of these five schemes it is learnt that the following four schemes have been approved by the Agriculture Refinance Corporation, a wing of the Reserve Bank. The Karkhana authorities have taken up the execution of these schemes and have called the tenders for different components.

The Krishna Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana had requested to take up the work of Kedarnath Pani -Puravatha Yojana at Nerle'. The scheme was taken up and the Design, plans and estimates have already been submitted to the Karkhana. The details of the Scheme are as below Estimated cost Rs. 61,08,000/-Final Agency charges Rs. 91,620/-

In addition to these major schemes, Prof. Sakhadeo and Prof. Santpur prepared the plans and estimates as also supervised the execution of the Indira Pani Puravatha Yojana and Mahaveer Pani Puravatha Yojana at Inam Dhamni.

Each seheme provides irrigation facilities for 150 acres. This work was done on an honorary basis as a social work on behalf of the College to the areas adjacent to the College.

On the same basis the plans for another scheme also at Inam-Dhamani viz. = Vasant Pani Puravatha Yojana No. 1 ' have been submitted and the work is due to Commence. This scheme provides irrigation facility for 50 acres. All these three schemes have long rising mains. As an off-shoot of this activity the department has been having a dialogue with Shri. Sathyanarayana, Deputy Executive (Engineering) of M/s. Kirloskar Brothers Ltd , Kirloskarwadi, in respect of design and development of a Controlled closure non-return valve' with a view to reduce the Water-Hammer pressure in the rising main due to power. The Research and development wing of M/s. Kirloskar Brothers Ltd., who were already seized of the matter have now come up with such a valve and have approahed for testing of the same in the field. Various authorities in public sector and private sector are being approached for this purpose.
