I) The waste treatment process developed by this College to treat spent wash has been adopted by few more distilleries in India, via.
a) M/s Krishna Sahakari Sakhar Kark-hana Ltd., Rethre Budruk,
b) The Co-operative Sugar Mills Ltd., Parite,
c) The Co-operative Sugar Mills Ltd., Chittur, Kerala,
d) M/s Ugar Sugar Works Ltd., Ugar.
2) Prof. B. Subba Rao and Prof. S. S. Santpur have received a research grant from C. S. 1. R. on the topic - Oxygenation Capacity in Cavitation System. " By this method the organic pollution of waste waters can be reduced in a lesser detention time.
3) Prof. S. V. Ranade and Shri Kutte are working on cellulose digestion. The object of the project is to recover biogas from glucose from saw dust and similar cellulosic materials.
4) Prof. Dr. Subba Rao's article ‘. A low-cost waste treatment for the disposal of spent wash " has been published in Water Pollution Research " Pergammon Press, London.
5) Prof. B. Subba Rao has been elected as a Member of the Bye-Product Committee by Deccan Sugar Technological Association of India for the year 1972-73
6) Prof. Dr. Subba Rao has received an award for the best paper on Bye-product recovery by All India Sugar Technological Association of India 1971, on the paper entitled " Cane Sugar Industry Waste Classification, Prevention and Treatment."
7) Prof. S. S. Karandikar submitted his dissertation (for M. E. degree ) entitled Efficacy of Partial Cut-Off in stratified soils. ' It deals with the effect of partial cut off on seepage gradients and uplift pressure below earth dams by electrical analogy model. Various stratifications of soils in foundations are considered. [ Latest News- Prof. S. S. Karandikar has passed his M. E. ( Civil ) Examination in Hydraulics & Dam Engineering securing first class.
S Educational Tour-B. E. (Civil) Class
An educational tour for the students of B. E. (Civil) class was arranged during second week of February 1973. The students visited various works at Poona and Bombay. We are proud to state that at most of the places we visited, we found that the past students of this College were in key positions and they took keen interest in showing and explaining all the details of the various construction works.
Prof. H. U. Kulkarni (Applied Mec-hanics Department) and Prof. S. V. Ranade (Civil Engineering Department) accompanied the students during the tour. They visited prestressed concrete bridges (a) over Mutha river at Poona, (b) over Ulhas river at Ambarnath, and at the Napian Sea Road at Bombay. The other interesting visits at Poona were (i) Water Treatment Plant constructed by H. C. C. Ltd., Bombay, (ii) Siporex Factory, (iii) Maharashtra Synthetic Pvt. Ltd., (iv) C. W. P. R. S. at Khadakw-asala, and (v) the Civil Engineering models at College of Military Engineering The visits at Bombay were arranged to study (i) Pile driving works, Bombay Port Trust, and (ii) Dadar Sewage Purification Plant.
A small group of students who have taken Industrial Waste Treatment as the elective subject also visited (i) Hindustan Antibiotics Factory, (ii) Cadbury Fry Company. and (iii) Union Carbide Chemicals Co.
